Let us face it - like it or not, the West must know that China is not the old China anymore. It is a nation with the most foreign reserve . It has purchased most of US T-bills. Its' people is not only one of the most diligent and the hardest working people in the world, but it also has the highest savings per capita. China is now the third largest economy, and soon to be second. Some Western nations will be desperately needing the Chinese capital to relieve it recession caused by the US subprime crisis and mortgage meltdown, and the current food crisis. The trend for China to become a powerful nation was un-imaginable before, and it is now un-stoppable.
Everyone knows that Chinese government has an enormous task trying to feed and to house 1.3 billion people; furthermore, to create 13 million additional new jobs each year has not been an easy task for the Chinese leaders. The world will definitely not be in a better place if China is in chaos. Living in China, I can attest that the Chinese government and its system are doing a very fine job coping with the fast economic growth for the last twenty years. China is not a pure communism country as the Soviet Union was. It has its unique political system which other countries should not feel alienated or intimidated. In fact, they should have an open attitude in welcoming China's reforms. Although China is not yet a superpower , it is evitable of becoming one soon. The Western world should learn how to work with this fact, rather than rejecting it.
The West shall not befool itself by treating China as a newly independent nation. China is one of the oldest and continuous civilizations. China does not need to simply copy the political system the West has invented. China is already slowly adopting many good ways by allowing more freedom for its people. It is developing its own public participation process, too. As a nation which is capable of sending astronauts into space, with a small and yet to be developed middle income people, China needs not to copy the political system and the life value of the West. Instead, China will come up with its own open democratic system. It will be based upon Beijing formulas, not the Washington formulas.
Let us not forget that when the West was unable to feed its population, China was already a superpower in the middle kingdom. Lack the knowledge to participate the industrial revolution and the well for military expansion of the colonial forces in the late 18 and 19th centuries, China was a weak dynasty and an easy prey for the West. In the 20th century, with the unfortunate civil war between Chiang Kai-sek and Mao Tze-dong, China had have taken a big toll on its development. But all those are history now. As any historian would advise you, China is now an awaken dragon. As a global villager, Western nations and Western politician shall develop a skill to with this awakened dragon rather than poking her.
I remembered vividly that when China first won the right host the 2008 Olympic in Beijing, many people had doubts about China's well and financial capability in hosting such an extravagant game. I remembered that I told those people in doubt not to worry as one of the most precious ingredients of the Chinese culture is to safeguard its face - its honor. That is why the elaborated Olympic venues in China are all well-completed ahead of their planned deadlines. If the Western media and politicians tried to damaging the honor and put mud on Chinese people's face, they would only invite bad consequences.
Let us be fair to the Olympic Game, too. There are many venues such as WTO, and other UN organizational meetings where political differences can be argued and discussed. But an Olympic Game should be kept from political differences. This is the virtue of the Game as the Greek had invented some thousands years ago. The athletes around the world have been trained and worked so hard hoping to win the medals in this Game. By boycotting and to embarrass China from the Game, the West will only hurts these athletes more. As an old saying, what goes around will ends around. I don't think people in UK would want to see its London Game in 2012 boycotted by the Chinese athletes and citizen. I also don't think any nation wants China to interfere with the independence of its internal state and its internal political movement. I don't think any company will be able to afford the risk from doing business within China.
China is rising. None can prevent the tide from rising. Similarly, no Western country would be able to stop or to prevent China from rising. China is not what China once was. I hope the West will stop ridiculing the Olympic torch relay and boycotting the game. Let us give China and the Chinese people a fair chance to prove it as a responsible world citizen. For sure, China is not and will not be an easy target to pick any more!
